Michael Johnson is Vice President, Koppers Utility and Industrial Products, elected to the post in August 2018. He is responsible for advancing the Koppers strategy of being a vertically integrated, high-value global supplier of wood-based technologies to infrastructure markets.
Mr. Johnson previously served as President and CEO of Cox Industries Inc, a privately-owned business specializing in the manufacturing and global distribution of pressure-treated utility poles and marine construction products, which was acquired by Koppers in April 2018.
He has served as Chairman of the Treated Wood Council and is a former President of the Southern Pressure Treaters Association, as well as a member of the American Wood Products Association.
In our State, Mr. Johnson Chairs the Executive Committee of the Indian Waters Council of the Boy Scouts of American and the Board of the Palmetto Conservation Foundation. Mr. Johnson is former Chairman of Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance and the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce. He is also served the past Chair of the State Workforce Investment Board serving at the request of Governor Haley. He and his family are active members of the First Baptist Church of Orangeburg. Mr. Johnson previously served as the Chair of the Chamber of Commerce in Orangeburg, the Chair of the Orangeburg March of Dimes, the Downtown Orangeburg Revitalization Committee, and many other civic groups.
Mr. Johnson earned his undergraduate degree from Furman University and his master’s degree in business administration from the University of South Carolina and masters in family business from Kennesaw State University. He enjoys backpacking, hunting and is an avid reader. He resides in Columbia, SC with his wife Cyndi and three children, Brady (20), Causey (6) and Lilly-Rae (4).
